LARGE PAINTING WITH ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
Period: Second half of the 19th century
Price: € 4.500
Beautiful large painting on canvas created with vegetable colors. The painting depicts the banquet between Antony and Cleopatra; as known from Plutarch, Cleopatra organized a sumptuous banquet to impress Antony, at the end of which she dissolved a precious gem in the chalice of wine, as visible in the scene in the center of the canvas and as reported by the inscription on the upper part: "Cleopatra gemmam ineffabilis valoris Antonio in potum fundit", which translated is: "Cleopatra puts a gem of ineffable value in Antony's drink". Seated at the laid table, on their respective sides appear Antony, dressed in a lorica, and Cleopatra, in elegant clothes and adorned with pearls and a diadem. Around them move the women of the queen's court, who carry trays of food and keep Cleopatra company, as well as a flying Eros. This is a very common scene in 17th-century tapestries, replicated by several workshops in Brussels: among these, one of the tapestries is now kept at the Hermitage, and this large painting draws its inspiration from it. Finally, to adorn the scene there is a frame of vegetal and fruit garlands, a reference to the Renaissance style, with small characters harvesting it. It is a unique work, of great historical and antique value, which allows you to furnish any environment with refinement. Tuscan manufacture in neo-Renaissance style, from the second half of the 19th century. Measurements: H x W 285 x 285cm
