Painting of Dante and Beatrice by Raffaello Sorbi, second half of the 19th century
Author : Raffaele Sorbi
Period: Second half of the 19th century
Price: € 25.000
Beautiful oil painting on canvas, framed in an elegant carved and gilded wooden frame, complete with a mirror. This work, belonging to the famous Florentine painter Raffaello Sorbi, bears the artist's signature in the lower right and is dated 1863, placing it in his early youth production. Sorbi's stylistic characteristics are clearly visible, in which the warm 'macchiaioli' tones blend with neo-Gothic and Romantic subjects, taken from the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. In this case, the painting depicts the meeting between Dante and Beatrice, set in Florence, in front of a church, probably the Badia Fiorentina, a place frequented by both Dante, Beatrice, and their respective families. Against the backdrop of Renaissance Florence, it is possible to observe characters entering and leaving the church, while figures of the people and a little girl sitting on the steps overlook the sides of the main scene. The main scene represents the meeting between a young Dante, wearing the characteristic red tunic, and the young Beatrice, who walks arm in arm with her mother, the latter dressed in an ornate and typical noble dress. Dante's gaze, enraptured by Beatrice's beauty, expresses profound admiration. Beatrice, with an angelic face, wears an elegant white dress and a delicate veil over her hair; while with one eye she looks at the ground, with the other she seems to silently cross Dante's gaze. The attention to detail is clearly extraordinary: a butterfly flies lightly and grass grows between the stones of the road, while the vivid colors and strong realism make this work of absolute value and beauty. Finally, the painting is in an excellent state of preservation. Measurements: H x W x D overall 126 x 102.5 x 7cm; work only H x W 100 x 76cm
